I'm sure they could use it for whatever they wanted, but both the Sherman and the Tiger I had openings called pistol ports. Kind of interesting, actually.

Early Sherman, without a loader's hatch...needed some way to chuck the spent main gun brass. Later versions had a much requested loader's hatch and the pistol port eventually went away

Centurion had it too, was taught to be used also to clear the back deck of strangers with a hand weapon. Mostly it was to eject empty cases too.

Nice to see the unstoppable M1919's. If killing machines were a work of art, this would be it.
We modified our M1919's and big M2's in the 60's and 70's and turned great machine guns into temperamental machine guns...... and in the case of the M2, with its so called quick change barrel, into an unreliable machine gun. Wasn't anyone listening............ It already HAD a quick change barrel!

One of my favorite scenes from the movie Jesus Christ Superstar were the Centurions (representing Angels) chasing Judas through the desert, convincing him to give Christ up.

That's about right. We did too...but then we could just have changed to the Mag 58 instead of waiting until 30 years on. When a design is showing problems, it's usually because it's needing to be built new, not rebuilt.
