If you're going to use a No.4 stock bolt on an SMLE, you need to make sure it has the flat washer and spring washer too. The damaged tie straps I've seen were usually lacking one or the other.

Indeed. Worth tightening on the butt before attempting to fit the forend so that the protrusion if any of the end of the bolt past the front face of the butt socket can be seen and addressed as required.
