By-the-way, I was almost in your backyard in 1999. I was initially selected to be part of Operation Echo, the
Canadian
contingent of CF-18's, pilots and groundcrew sent to Aviano air base in 1999 to support 441 Squadron from CFB Cold Lake in Alberta. I was an Airfield Engineer, not a 'ramp monkey' but it would be an excellent opportunity for members of 4AES to support NATO operations and gain operational experience. My boss was already over there and wanted me on the ground with him but I got bumped when a senior officer pulled rank to get his son on that mission.
What a pity.
I still have to meet an American military who does not like it in Aviano.

That was obviously ironic... No cigarettes for me, but good food, good booze and a few other things (no drugs, never in my life. Not even tried once) are always welcome.
