Large pistol in place of large rifle primers?
Somehow I managed to run out of large rifle primers for my 7 mm Mauser and similar milsurps. Any idea if large magnum, pistol primers would suffice? I have a good supply of those. I realize they are a bit shorter than the large rifle primers, and would sit below flush a bit more.

Never mind. It makes sense from my reading that the thinner cup wall of the pistol primer would more than likely pierce, and could cause a catastrophic failure with the higher pressures of the rifle loads.

I tried using large pistol primers back in the '80s for some large rifle jobs. In 45/70 it would reliably light IMR3031. In 30/06 with ball powder it was extremely unreliable and would often glaze the powder but not ignite it. Just leave it clumpy or hang fire. It's not reliable and shouldn't be attempted. Those are only the two examples I have off hand without checking my books.

ThAnkyou sir. I pretty much determined it would not be a good idea, but your first-hand Experience is yet another example of why I should not try.
