Does anyone know what this slot is that is milled in this No4?

It's possible that it was some form of deactivation, or because the receiver is thin there, it cracked thru and someone milled the crack out to stop further progress of the cracking.

Mine are not the best, but they are not too bad. I can think of lots of Enfields I'd rather have but instead of constantly striving for more, sometimes it's good to be satisfied with what one has...
Interestingly, every cut on my skeletonized No. 1 MkIII is on the right side of the rifle.
That is not UK MIlitary skeletonisation - either another nations or a civiian job.
