I know a well placed shot will knock down just about anything with the right ammo. I only have 3 rifles I will take on this trip and that's all, but its a blast doing it all day specially if you love it and don't have to clean them. I read a bunch on these Hogs and Monster Hogs. This is not going to be a fun trip where I get to go melt my barrel trip. I have to clean some out and everything I read it seems everyone has there own way on knocking them down, and I'm sure there all great ways I'm just looking for the the best way without getting into trouble like last time.

With 5.56 I wouldn't go small bullet, but use a soft point. I've taken deer without trouble with 55 gr soft point. As for the .308 ammo, a 150gr soft point should be fine. The name brands should all be about the same.
Large boars can have a gristle plate up to 2" in thickness to protect them from another boar's tusks when fighting over females in estrus. There are a lot of anecdotal accounts of light or soft point bullets not penetrating deep enough to drop a large hog. Soft-points larger than .224 will do the trick but I'd hesitate on using .223/5.56 soft-points if you want to kill the big ones.

On my way to New Orleans I stopped at a friends in Bhama. Who invited me out to a organized Hog hunt. I was only traveling with a handgun so he loaned me a AR 15. I Learned Sapper's point the hard way after the first 3 I hit with 5.56 55Gr FMJBT with the tiny hollow point bounced (or seemed to) off of them. Then realized I was hitting too high like I was Deer hunting. After placing my shots right behind or through the leg, under that shoulder blade I was good to go. Right behind the ear worked well also when given the chance. They donated that nasty pulp, loaded by tractor and hauled by trailers. As I happily drove away for New Orleans.

Jim, That's good ammo hope i find some locally. I need to find some HC nasty Ammo. The Backhoe is broke so I cant get too wild like last time, they were all so mad I guess they were much more ****ed at those darn hogs. I got so lucky but that was a great idea, Thanks (I will modify them myself.
I'm using my Ruger 30 Carbine BlackHawk with Critical Defense Ammo. just have to be careful i've had shell expansion before

Whereabouts in Texas are you? I live 1/2 hr. North of Dallas but I'd sure be happy to give you a hand culling the herd, either day or night. I've got a few spare ARs if you need to borrow one.
Are you suggesting you'll cut tips off FMJ ammo? That can result in a stuck jacket in a barrel, be aware. It's not a regular occurrence but really CAN happen. Would be disastrous...
The pigs I've shot I've used a 444 Marlin (240gn FBHP @2400fps) and a 303 (150gn FBSP @2500fps) there is no trade off with horsepower get a large boar with hard baked mud on him then the 5.56 may struggle but a 308 or 303 energy rifle will see them off.
