If he's not dead that's one heck of an uncomfortable position to be laying in. Looks like artillery, mortar or a grenade got him. Something explosive, it's probably what got the cow too.

The ol' cow is puffed up so they have both been dead for a tad, still as you chaps suggested very bunched up an MG42 would take scant time to decimate that group.
