I accidentally got into one of those jackpots and it cost me far more than I was expecting. Takes the value away and leaves you wishing you hadn't. I quit the site immediately after finishing and getting settled up. That'll learn me...

I've had to suffer through that a few times with the big auction houses. Costs of playing I suppose. It hurts though that a lot of times it's pushing 35% between taxes and premiums

Definitely have to be careful. Awhile back when Morphey's was auctioning off the remainder of Larry Ruth's collection I bid and won a wooden WRA ammo crate. My winning bid was $35 and I was really thinking I got a great deal but with shipping, an additional handling fee, tax and premium I ended up paying $120 +.
After that I was happy I didn't "win" anything that went for big bucks. Lesson learned.

Oh wow! I have never participated in the huge auction houses and have never been involved with an auction that had a premium buyers fee. Wayne, that is mind-blowing that a $35 win turned into over $120 purchase! I would have been PO'd. I bet you're crate is worth $120 but still, that would take the joy out of winning for sure

Checked both Auctions to see how high they've been bid up to this morning. Seen both were ending on the 16th and 'Thought' they'd been extended.
Luckily I put the Ending Date in the opening post. Don't they say it's your Memory that goes first? I think I'm loosing it fellows.

I could really have got in over my head too. I wondered why some guys were bowing out. Me too, lesson learned. Glad it was a cheaper lesson.

I've already calculated how high I would bid and still stay within my limit with all of the add ons. That really cuts down what the seller will get!

Yeah, the "15 minute rule" cost me a lot of money when I was bidding on that near mint Ross MkIII I bought. Interested bidders have a week to decide what they're willing to pay for a rifle, the 15 minute rule allows for the current owner of a rifle to get a shill buyer bidding if he feels he's leaving some dollars on the table. I'm not saying that's what happened to me but after all but one other bidder dropped out he would enter another bid right at 14 minutes. I had to raise my max bid a few times which added another grand to the final selling price. I was about to drop out when he quit bidding.
