    Bundeswehr Kampfmesser 68

I recently picked up an example of the old type Bundeswehr field knife. Not the greatest condition, but original ones aren’t getting any more common and this was reflected in the price. Has anyone taken one of these apart? The nut and bolt near the blade is obvious, but the hollow nut at the rear is less so. Does it require a screwdriver on both sides at once? I’d like to get it apart as I am curious why the blade seems to sit low in the handle?

I am also considering repainting the scabbard as the colour and condition doesn’t lead me to believe it is original. Would I be right in thinking standard Bundeswehr green (RAL 6014 Gelboliv) would be more correct?

Scabbard looks good to me. Compared it with several examples online and it seems there is some variation in the color, possibly from age or use.

Found a lot of Chinese repros on eBay, must be a popular knife.

It used to be we had lots of them circulating among the guys that were posted over to Europe. I haven't seen one since then.

It's unfortunate that someone has "had a go at it" on the blade with a sander/coarse abrasive without knowing what they were doing.

I would leave the scabbard alone.

Finally got it apart with some penetrating oil and persistence. The reason why the blade sits slightly low is because for reasons unknown a previous owner ground away part of the sides of the bottom of the ricasso, so the crossguard sits slightly high and some additional washers were required to get a tight fit. Why..?

Still, I can now clearly see the markings and it was made by the famous Solingen blade firm of Weyersberg, Kirschbaum & Cie in 1969. Now to tidy up and reassemble.

So, for future reference, it DOES come apart the way it appears to? Just unscrew those two and it all drops apart?

You can see that with an original...

It's difficult to think of a polite word that best describes what someone has done to it.

Yes, undo the two screws and in theory the handle pulls off of the tang. However, it was on very tight and it took some time and effort to get it off without damaging anything.

    Here’s how it should look:
