Job Opportunity in Mass. - What do I gotta do?

Hi All,

I have a potential job opportunity in Massachusetts. I currently reside in Ohio. It looks like I would need to get a FID (Firearm Identification Card) and methinks my post-ban AR-15 won't be coming with me. I got a few questions.

1.) I'm assuming I need a FID. How long after you apply does it take to be issued? What if I still have an out-of-state drivers license at the time I apply? Or do I need a Mass. issued ID before I can apply? Must I be an official state resident before applying for a FID?

2.) Will a post-ban upper put me in the clear on the AR15 (mine is the A2 config, if that helps)? Or are large capacity AR magazines out?

3.) I don't have any handguns - just shotguns, a .22LR rifle, and 2 Garands. Are there any other laws I need to be aware of? Also 1 black powder rifle....EDIT

4.) Are there any CMP participating clubs in the Worchester area? (I know, if you want this why are you considering the move to Mass. in the 1st place - Answer: I'm an unemployed capitalist)

Any other "gotchas" to take into account when I consider any offers of employement there? How are the taxes up there (cringe)?

I'd contact the Massachusetts State Police and dot all Is cross all the Ts first hand,and be safe.


Massachusetts has some stringent gun laws and they enforce them.

Mike - Handguns are enjoyable to shoot and I feel that every American should own at least one S&W revolver and know how to use it. If someone breaks into your home, and you have to use your M1, the news media will report that you possess "assault weapons and have stockpiled an arsenal of ammunition". I can see the headlines.

That will cause your new neighbors to wet their pants. Sympathy will be directed at the poor robber. Your new senator, Barney Frank (you lucky dog), may denounce you on NPR. Your other new senator, Ted Kennedy (does it get any better?) may introduce a bill in the senate to have you exiled.

So the only way out of this is a handgun, one for each hip. Wear them proudly, openly and legally as you walk around Cambridge and Harvard Yard. Show the natives of Massachussets that you're a man to be reckoned with.

Ok theres a few things....

1st it takes abouta month to get the card once you apply. I think you need some proof that you moved here perm. My suggestion move to Western part of MA, LTC's alot easier to get and gun rights are more respected than Eastern part.

As for the postban AR... Thats a toughy. I know someone who moved here and had a bunch of machineguns from where he was. They wernt going to give him the machine gun license he needed to keep them here, and raised all sorts of hell and finally got it. If it is a post ban, its legal to have, you just need to get the upper that conforms to the post 92 ban, as we have the same AWB in effect. You can have large cap AR mags so long as they are pre ban mags.

3 you MAY have to have them "registered" here... If you have a C&R you can do the paperwork on the garands yourself. Since you already own the others too, may also be able to fill out the forms yourself without a dealer (least for now). The BP rifle(so long replica of antique BP rifle and not modern design) exempt from triggerlocks and regisetering

4 there are a few CMP affiliated clubs out that way near west springfield ect.

Where in Massachusetts is your job? Could you live in Vermont or New Hampshire and commute to your job? Even Connecticut is better than Massachusetts. The states in southern New England are quite small. I used to live in eastern Connecticut and now reside in western Wisconsin. The distances there are much shorter state to state compared to the midwest. Carl

One problem you have to watch for. Mass has crazy laws on Hi Cap magazines. The law grandfathered those magazines IN STATE only, unless you have an FFL. Moving from another state and transporting them in can become a big legal issue.

Furthermore you will need to get a class 1 license to purchase Hi Cap magazines, so you cannot claim you purchased them right after moving.

Actually need a class A or B to get large cap rifle mags. There was no grandfather clause, just needs to be preban is all. Buy em all the time for my m1 carbine, thompson M1 and M1A from auctions or gunshops ect. Ours arnt serialized like CA does (so I heard)

Go to this web site Gun Owners' Action League its the NRA state affiliate. They can tell you all the current things you need to know and what communities to avoid. They also have a list of the CMP affiliated clubs on their web site. Hopington and Riverside have reduced course shoots and it's been awhile but Ft. Devens Gun Club gets to practice at the 600 yard line. Nashua in NH is the big one for highpower and Reading in MA holds the State CMP champ. shoots for leg points.
