Curious Inland

Found a 6,316,8XX Inland carbine that is all correct except.......It is in the wrong stock. All the parts are correct for the rifle according to Riesch's 5th Edition. The stock has no marking in the sling well and there is a P on the grip, the right side of the butt has what appears to be a Standard Products Ord. Cartouche. The hand guard is a Type II, but unmarked. The recoil plate is a Type III and is marked PJ (who is that?). My guess is action was taken out of the original stock and placed in this one. Any one care to hazard a guess??

The recoil plate is a late war replacement. What is the date on your barrel?

The Inland barrel has no date on it. Have never seen one without a date.

During the fall of 1944 a lot of Inland barrels were marked with just the year or not even that. Your receiver would be a bit later then that but not much so an undated barrel could be correct for it.

My copy of Riesch's book alludes to the fact that some barrels weren't dated. This one has a Type III barrel band marked JI and a Type III rear sight I.R.Co. both of which would be correct for the S/N range. It is a pity that the stock isn't the proper one.

Were they issued at that date with M2 (potbelly) stocks or M1 stocks? Shouldn't be too hard finding a correct stock for it...sounds like an excellent carbine.

If it has no date, it should have BI stamped behind barrel flat behind the gas port. Brown-Lipe-Chapin division. I have one.. 5.0 million. no date

No BI stamped on the barrel flat. I did wind up getting the carbine. Got it for $400 and swapped the stock and $100 for a properly cartouched Inland stock with a Inland 4 rivit handguard. Figure I did fairly well on the deal. Now I need to find a Type III Inland Recoil Plate as the stock had a Type II DI marked recoil plate in it.

Some Inland recoil plates are marked WI under the tang.
