What Are The Serial Numbers That Would Identify A Remington 03-a4 Sniper? Are There Any Serial Numbers In The 499xxxxx Area? Thanks, Duggaboy

Are you perhaps asking regarding the #499XXXX 03A4 in the Jouster For Sale section ? One of the ranges for Renmington 03A4 rifles was sn's 4992001 to 4999045 (range actually produced ended at 4998320 IIRC).

The first order of 20,000 rifles used s/ns 3407088 to 3427087

The second order for 8,365 rifles was placed before the first order was complete. So there was period when the orders overlapped.

Serial numbers in the second order include Z4000001 to Z4002920 and
4992001 to 499859X

The 499NNNN range had to be added when A3 production inadvertently ran into the s/n range allocated for A4's. The 2900~ A4 receivers with duplicate numbers had a "Z" prefix added and Ordnance created a new higher range for the balance of A4 and A3 production.

The upper limit of A4 s/n ranges varies by as much as a couple of thousand depending on which reference you consult.

The number cited above was calculated by Mr. William Hansen for his 2004 article on A4 production in the journal of the Remington Society of America.
He spent considerable effort to account for scrapped receivers and his numbers are the closest to the actual observed rifles.

Just a note: Knowing the serial number is not necessary to Id a A4 sniper. All original made 1903A4 sniper rifles have split serial numbers and mfg name on the receiver, one on one side the other on the other side, to allow seeing them when the scope mount is installed. Ray

The A4 rifles in the three ranges cited will have split markings.
But as Ray points out its important to know the other characteristics as well as the numbers of original or correct rifles. The maker will be always be Remington for example. Additionally, the font used for the serial numbers on A4's is smaller than that used for A3's.

RayG is correct; ID for an A4 is not the number itself but its location and font. Some folks have tried to pass off faked up A3's as A4's, telling the buyer that they were in the "right serial number range." Just another scam.
