To legally own a "weapon" which can include some classes of Air Rifles and even cross bows as well as Rifles and Pistols and Shotguns in Canada you must do a course(or challenge) and pass an exam that shows you to be competant to own a rifle,pistol or shotgun etc.You must ALSO pass a police check that shows that you do NOT have any restrictions with regard to your owning a firearm/
We do NOT have this "convicted felon" designation that you have in the US of A.IF you were convicted or a 'crime of violence' you might have a prohibition against your owning firearms for whatever period the court that convicted you imposed.Five,ten and fifteen year bans are the norm but in some cases it can be a lifelong ban.
No loss of civil rights like being able to vote exist here for any reason provided of course that you ARE A Canadian Citizen.If you are NOT you can't vote.I know of a few American Citizens who have Canadian Firearms Posession and Acquisition Licences as there is NO restriction in that regard.
Various 'sharpies' have gotten them so as to buy guns up here and then either legally import them(sporting arms) or smuggle them(military surplus small arms especially American military issue rifles and pistols which are prohibited imports into the US of A without a State Dept permit which they will NOT grant even if you apply properly)

Long guns like rifles and shotguns are NOT "restricted weapons" with a few exceptions like M1 Carbines.They are restricted weapons due to barrel length supposedly but in reality this is due to the fact that French Canadian criminals used to love M1 Carbines because they were A) small,short and fired rapidly on semi-auto.They used to cut the barrels just ahead of the front band and cut the buttstocks off along the rear profile of the pistol grip and then blow each other away with them when they weren't holding up various banks and credit unions(called Caisse Populaire in Quebec)This POed the Uzi armed cops so they lobbied Ottawa ban M1 Carbines.This led to M1 Carbines becoming'restricted weapons' which means you need a permit to take it out of your place of residence.No permit and you get caught and you are supposed to be in the glue
ALL handguns are 'restricted weapons'.So are another class of weapons which are classed as being "PROHIBITED".Some dogbreath mountie wanting to make Corporal and sucking up to the anti gun crowd dreamed up a class of small arm called"Converted Automatics".M14's(REAL ONES with selector shaft locks WELDED to the rocker trip etc) as well as cutesy things like Thompson SMG's and MP5K's and MG-34's and M1918A2 BAR's and M1919A4 MMG's converted to fire SA only were in this class.An overall length of 26 inches was the limit so the SMG's were ALWAYS restricted but the M14's etc were NOT until wannabee Cpl Dudley Doughnut came along and dreamed up the Converted Auto category of restricted weapons.No permit no take it out of your safe except inside your place of residence.

Other rifles became prohibited on account of the fact that they LOOKED EVIL in the eyes of some cop looking to suck up to the anti-gun crowd and maybe get promoted.Bullpup anythings are in this class as are any AK lookalikes.

There is no rhyme nor reason for much of the nonsense except we have a lot of cops who want to MAKE LAWS instead of enforcing them.Recently the RCMP have shown themselves to be a gang of incompetant perjurors in a judicial enquiry here in BC and hopefully this will lead to their getting the boot OUT of this province.They have murdered at least THREE people and done more lying,cheating and covering up than you can possibly imagine.We had our own Provincial Police here in British Columbia up until 1949 and hopefully we will again sooner rather than later.

We DO have movements afoot in parliament to kill the registration of long guns like shotguns and rifles but the lieberal, pinko, commie,granola eating,tree hugging,cappuccino swilling long haired FOREIGNERS like that Kennedy dope addict congresscritter from NY keep screaming that GUN CONTROL is the only way.My idea of"Gun Contol" is hitting what you aim at and IF you abuse the ownership of firearms you should do a minimum of FIVE years on TOP of whatever else you are sentanced to for the rest of the crimes you committed.Let Kennedy and his pals stay at home and mind their own damned business.We have enough lieberal swine of our own up here who are perpetually running off at the mouth without having to listen to the descendants of a bootlegger with a family history of boozing and negligent killings AND getting away scot free too.

I may have digressed a bit but I hope that you have seen a bit of what's what re firearms nonsense up here.I know that Illinois and a few other states have similar legislation re firearms ownership permits etc but as you have seen we DO have some items that you folks would give your left(you know what's) for like REAL M14's and Thompsons etc.You can also own semi auto Czech Vz 58's with 19 inch barrels and buy cases of 1200 rds of Czech M43 ball for $180 and head for the bush and have a ball.NO PERMITS needed just the licence to buy the rifle(which is NON-restricted)
