With The Old Breed
I believe it is from Eugene Sledge's book "With the Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa ". If you have not read this book, do so. Goo, it is about the Marines
The following is from John W. Thomason's classic work of the First World War, from which Eugen Sledge derived the title of his book about Peleliu and Okinawa.
"Rifles were high and holy things to them, and they knew five-inch broadside guns. They talked patronizingly of the war, and were concerned about rations. They were the Leathernecks, the Old Timers: collected from ship’s guards and shore stations all over the earth to form the 4th Brigade of Marines, the two rifle regiments, detached from the navy by order of the President for service with the American Expeditionary Forces."
Something recently occurred to me. Having retired from the Navy after twenty four years I currently work as a DoD employee and have the privilege of working with active duty Marines. They are this generation's "Old Breed", Professional Warriors, Combat Veterans all, that are making a career of the Corp. They are today's Leathernecks, today's Old Breed.

I had read that "the Pacific" will also be based on Robert Leckie's "Helmet for My Pillow." It covers Pearl Harbor through Peleliu and "With the Old Breed" picks up with Peleliu through Okinawa.
FWIW, I am now reading "The Last Stand of Fox Company: A True Story of U.S. Marines in Combat" (for those who don't know, it's about the Korean War battle around the Chosin reservoir) and it is excellent.

Dr. Sledge was a quiet and un-assuming biology prof. at the University of Montevallo. I spent 1970-1974 there and he taught our biology class a few times when the reg prof was away. I dont think even the faculty was aware of his service till the book was published. His son has model of the Jap machine gun emplacement and a super display regarding his father. Our small group were History majors. Little did we know.

Don't know if I can do that one. In the first movie when special effects put the tracers past them I came out of my seat and if you have ever been morter'd from close range you would think it was real not a movie. Also the constant background noise, artty going off at differing ranges. Very real. And last the non-tracer rounds zipping by. That is an "Oh $h!t" moment you never forget. They got the noise just right. I think it took me six days to watch the whole thing.
