1873 Trap door.

I was just emailed about a TD that is a 1873 with the serial number of 565430.

I have images but have not put them on Photobucket yet. Rifle looks clean but we can not see any cartouche.

That serial number would make it an 1888 model, made in 1893. It should have have an 1884 block on it....

I am sure he missed some of the finer parts of this rifle. I do know it does not have a place in the stock for a cleaning kit.

A.F. Medic,.. Check the barrel length,.. as no rod bayonet shows in the photos it should be a cadet rifle, as my #564257 is. According to Weite / Ernst, 1893 production was 9760 Model 1884 rifles, 5000 of that being cadet rifles, including the last 4320 made.

One thing fer sure, the only part of thatr rifle that was around in 1873 was the inspector's stamp.

So it is a "put together". I really do not know. Does not have a rod bayo.

Well. the buffington rear sight is 1884 and the breech block is at least the 1879, or 84 pattern The trigger should be smooth instead of serrated on a 73. Not necessarily a put-together. just the wrong date.
