Black tape over the muzzle, that's what I use hunting. Except when I use duck tape.
The Lolo country, where my brothers and I hunt, is wet in the fall, and it's all up and down. Tape up that muzzle!

Hey jon, I hunt in Wi. snow mud and its easy to take a fall in the woods. the roll behind the front sight is my tape source. Its makes it easy to replace after a shot. Take care and good hunting.....Frank

Peeled like a banana.

It was a left handed 870. I never went hunting with him again either.
It probably was the mud that blew it up but 870s did have a problem of barrels letting go. I had one of them.
I was pheasant hunting in the early morning and basically just had assembled the shot gun, checking the bore as I always do. A ringneck flew up and I touched the 870 off. I was greeted was a big explosion at the end of my barrel and the bird flew away.
Barrel was peeled back about six inches. I contacted Remington and they said "Send us the barrel". I di dand they said that. "There was a metal obstruction in the barrel or a stone as the inside of the barrel was scratched".
They sent me a new barrel and about two weeks later a gunsmith told me that there was a recall by Remington due to faulty steel in some 12 guage barrels. Go figure!

I use a target paster. It covers a .30 bore nicely and a round will blow right through it.

Hey jon, That's my Rem. 788 in 7mm08. I love this rifle for deer hunting. I have shot deer with it in every situation you can think of, except at night. My favorite shot is running bucks on an open field. I pull the trigger when they are at the top of their jump, seems to work for me. Oh by the way I shoot left handed. Have a good one.....Frank

Frank,
that's doing pretty good. No disrespect! The gun you can count on is the one you should use IMHO. The most important part of the gun is the person who fires it. You doin' good. take a kid hunting!

jon, I'll be taking two kids hunting this fall. My granddaughter and grandson. I have them shooting already and they're getting pretty good. They have both been out on hunts brefore but will have their own shotguns and rifles this season. They love the outdoors. I own 200 acres of woods and water in central Wi. Have a good one.....FRank
