I cannot tell, but does the first guy in line on the left side have on a BAR Belt?
If so, why is he carrying an M1?

Probably the assistant BAR man.

Yep, an assistant BAR man to the man directly behind him.

I found it strange that the assistant BAR man would be carrying an M1. I had thought they'd be carrying an M1 Carbine, due to weight.

It may have been a case of personal preference, or the CO's orders. Capt. Winters preferred the Garand over the carbine.

He was probably told the Germans shoot officers with carbines first. Making anyone with a M1 carbine a prime target.
