Question WTK How to fit stock to rear lugged receiver

I recently picked up a rear lugged Springfield M1Aicon receiver and need to know how to adapt the stock to accomodate it. Is there a tutorial somewhere or does someone make a wood stock to fit a rear lugged receiver? Or is it trial and error?

I would call it trial and error. I've never fitted an M1Aicon but on the Garand I slid the receiver without a barrel into the stock so that I could mark the outline of the lug. Then I clamped the stock in my mill and milled out a hole slightly larger than the lug to accept the acraglass.

With that done I drilled for the pillar and then drilled through for the attaching screw.

I bedded the pillar in place, putting release agent all over the receiver and the lug but leaving the lug bare. Once that hardened I re-coated the lug with release agent and bedded the lug in place.

All the bedding was done after barrel installation

    Hope that helps.

You begin by angling the barreled receiver into the stock. Where the lug touches the wood, you trace around it. You also measure how far the lug goes down from the receiver and cut the clearance at least that deep. Then you clear that out and try it again. Uusually it will need some more inletting/clearancing. I usually smear a small amount of grease on the block to show me where it is hitting and clear the rubs as required. I'm not talking about precision inletting of course, but loose inletting so you can put bedding material around the lug.

I don't know anyone who tries to inlet the rear lug without glass bedding, though that could be done. It would just take you an awful long time and if someone else was doing it, it would cost a lot more.
