They're not exactly a sniper's rifle. M3's are only worth more if they come with a complete M3 'Snooper scope' and batteries that work. A battery runs around $150US. Otherwise, it's a carbine with an odd groove in the receiver. Some claim an M3 is an M2 with the groove. That makes it a Class 3 firearm.

That's T3 not M3
The question was about a T3 carbine, not an M3. The T3 was made by Inland and Winchester and only a few thousand were made. The Inland and Winchester T3 carbines were different and each used a special receiver. I have an Inland with a welded receiver which I bought from RSI about 12 to 15 years ago for $1100. I also have an Inland complete with the type 2 Infrared Scope which set me back about $2500 around 2002.
The previous reply was correct about the M3 carbine being based on an M2 carbine, although I'm sure that the IR scope was installed on the M1
carbine over the years.

it seems like it was some type of custom receiver, this is the discription that is on the auction:
Very rare U.S. T3 Prototype Carbine made for the infra-red Snooperscope. This one has a complete forward T-3 receiver with anInland rear receiver grafted to the T-3. The T-3 part of the receiver has never been cut or demilled. The graft has been professionally done and doesn't show except under very close examination. Inland barrel with exc. bore. Very hard to find in any condition! Complete with proper Infra-Red Scope. Another T-3 Carbine just sold at James Julia Auction for $6325 without the scope!

They could also be four digit. Here are a few pics of a four digit Inland that I used to own.
When they tell you to behave, they always forget to specify whether to behave well or badly!
