    I should clarify....the better description would have been "free", tax-supported public education as a government entitlement. Virginia had plenty of schools, but you "paid to play" until the early 20th century. Education was a family or church responsibility, not the states, and so, would not be considered "public schools".

    .... OK ... I also don't notice anything about "public" schools ...

    MARYLAND ... King Williams School opened in 1696. It was the first school in the United Statesicon .
