Yours is the first mention in-thread of "compulsory public education".

I should clarify....the better description would have been "free", tax-supported public education as a government entitlement. Virginia had plenty of schools, but you "paid to play" until the early 20th century. Education was a family or church responsibility, not the states, and so, would not be considered "public schools".

MARYLAND ... King Williams School opened in 1696. It was the first school in the United States .
