My Lyman Reloading book says to use small rifle primers with 2400 powder. Can I safely use CCI 450 small rifle magnum primers?

I wouldn't. Magnum primers in small cases can cause some serious issues. BTW, based on my own testing....friends don't let friends use CCI primers! I know....today you use what you can get, but CCI's remain the only primer I have ever tested that caused velocity variations where other primers did not. YMMV!

I wouldn't use it with 2400 powder. However, it should work with a slightly reduced load of a ball powder such as H110 or W296.

I have used CCI 400, CCI 450, and WSRs in .30 Carbine with H110 and Win 296. The 450s will work fine with H110 or Win 296, you just need to reduce the charge a little. You shouldn't need 450s with 2400, it isn't that hard to light. I would use 400s or WSRs if they were available, if not, yeah, you can use the 450s with 2400, but don't expect great results. I don't even use magnum pistol primers with 2400 in my .357 mag pistol loads. My load of choice for .30 Carbine is WSR primer with 15.0 grain Win 296, GI cases and Remington 110 grain FMJs or soft points. It duplicates the original USGI load and is not too hot. Cases are slightly sooty! It also is very accurate and I don't have to worry about the action cycling properly. Clean up is easy. What more could you ask?

I have used 110gr FMJ-RN with 13gr of V-V N110 to great success and
very reliable !

now I´m trying to find a load with a spitzer type bullet, let´s see....

Had good results with the 110grs Hornady RN and 12.8grs. VV N110, Federal 205 Primers, OAL 42,7mm gives 5 rounds shotgroup of 2.6" at 100yards from a sandbag.

In regards to using military brass, are the primers crimped on 30 Carbine cases? Want to make sure I don't miss out on a step when I get ready to reload this brass.

I have reloaded about every USGI .30 Carbine case there is, and the only one's I have found to have crimped primers are WRA and WCC cases.

military crimps can be taken care of using your deburring tool. A quick twist in the primer hole and you should take enough crimp out to insert the new primer without distortion
