DVS,
Any way you could post some pictures of the stock and the slingwell markings?
Can you feel a flat spot where the Ordnance stamp (CC) may have been sanded off?
Over the years we've run across some stocks that look to have been transferred to INLAND by RMC (Rock Ola) and the Robert Irwin Co who made stocks for IP, S'G' and SG. These have been found with a ( I ) stamped in the slingwell near the letters of the maker. The RSG marked stocks found on SG or Saginaw Steering Gear Carbines are often found with additional letters or numbers added in the slingwell. Sometimes the RSG markings are very hard to see in the rough grain. Both Robert Irwin and early Inland stocks can be found with green/blue looking numbers stamped inside the stock's slide op well. Thought to be a type of Julian dating system.
Here are a few pictures for examples,
RSG type II oval cut Hi-wood. Marked RSG in the slingwell with a sideways stamped Serifed I. Also has the green number stamp along with a Inland Crossed Cannons Stamp on it. The CC is distorted from having been sanded and a rack number was painted on it.
The 1st is a TRIMBLE TN stock made for a SG..Saginaw Steering Gear carbine. It shows the numbers and letter thought to have been added at the SG plant in Saginaw, Michigan.
The 2nd one is a RSG made stock....see how hard the letters are to see?
And here is a RMC...Rock Ola (If I recall correctly ) it's a type II oval Hi-wood that has the stamped RMC in the slingwell and the I stamped. Thought to also be a transfer stock from Rock to Inland,
Just trying to say.......
Don't dump that stock yet. We're not sure who made it and it may be original to that carbine. Remember that Saginaw and Inland were both contractors for General Motors before the war and after.
Would love to see pictures of your stock and carbine.
Regards
