or is just sticking a bullet in the muzzle good enough?

local marine h34 (jamesport long island, new york) . yep, it flys, too.
of course, heliochoppers don't really fly, per say. more like 10,000 parts flying in loose formation.

You might try sending a self addressed stamped envelope to Steven Matthews at PO BOX 125, SCOTT OH 45886-0125 and ask him the currrent price (and if it's available) for a Stoneaxe gauge for your M1
, it'll do TE and ME both.

it good to have if you are buying a used rifle
a bullet will work - if you put it in known value bore as reference and compare that with the bore you are gaging
for tracking muzzle wear on you shooter - it is not necessary
From Duff's web site
S3. MUZZLE WEAR GAGE. Throw away your dummy cartridge! Now using this new tool you can precisely gage the muzzle wear of your rifle with the same accuracy that you gage your throat erosion. This new Muzzle Wear Gage is graduated in the same one thousandth of an inch increments as the Throat Erosion Gage we sell. It may be used to gage the muzzle if any .30 barrel, including the M1 Garand, M1 Carbine, M1903, M1903A3, M1903A4, M1917, and M14/M1A
(with flash hider removed). As muzzle wear is critical to accuracy, you cannot afford to be with out this new gage! - $35

The CMP
sells (or did) MW gauges. But why not get both? I bought one of the Stone Axe gauges & it works well on both the muzzle as well as the throat.

Goo,
I noticed some websites have problems when purchasing items using Internet Explorer. I think it is an Internet Explored security issue - something they are trying to prevent blocks some website actions. Try Mozilla Firefox. It's free. Whenever I can't seem to get through when purchasing on IE I use Firefox. I couldn't get through to purchase something from Turbotax of all places when using IE but it was easy as pie using Firefox.
Back on topic, I've bought one of Steve Matthews' combo TE/ME gauges and I like it.
