1910 Rock Island 1903
A friend has asked me to help him sell a 1903 Rock island, SN# 190,XXX, (looks to date to 1910)with a Springfield barrel marked SA over the bomb, with 6-12 below, then a A below that, Seems early for a rebarrel. Stock appear original,
Is a humpback with fingergroves, only mark on the stock is a S. behind the trigger guard. Condition is about 75-80%. Good bore and crown.
Any thought to value?, would like to see him get a fair price.
Thanks, remi

Actually, rebarrels started well before World War I.
Would it be possible to post some pictures? As possible worth could be anywhere from $350 to $1000 or so, details are important. Some other questions:
1) Does the stock have no, one or two stock bolts?
2) Is the handguard a high hump-type?
3) Markings on the bolt? Look especially on all sides of the safety lug, and on the top and bottom of the bolt handle "root".
4) Any R-marked parts (this would denote Remington, not Rock Island)?
5) Is the finish blued or parked?

Rick,
Thanks for the response, will do my best to answer
1) Does the stock have no, one or two stock bolts?
A) If you are asking if the stock has a cross stock lug bolt like a Mauser it has one. It has 2 action bolts.
2) Is the handguard a high hump-type?
A) Handguard is the high hump type
3) Markings on the bolt? Look especially on all sides of the safety lug, and on the top and bottom of the bolt handle "root".
A) I cannot find any markings on the bolt at all except for the ready and safe on the safety lug.
4) Any R-marked parts (this would denote Remington, not Rock Island)?
A) Only two parts with a marks is the front swivel band which has a U, and looks like the underside of the rear sight elavator is marked with a G on one side and a upside down 7 on the other
5) Is the finish blued or parked?
A) Finish is blued including the bolt
Did find a second stamped S on front of the stock.
Thanks again, remi

Remi,
Thx for posting pics! If possible, please post more, to include overall L & R profile, receiver/rear sight, fore end of stock, bolt handle, etc.
It sounds like an interesting, mostly correct, rifle.

Look on the extreme forward part of the stock (look where you'd look down the muzzle). Is there a 1/8" or 1/4" S stamped there?
I see no stock bolt below the serial number on the stock; is there one near the bolt handle?

Thanks,
Yes there is a 1/4 " high S stamped on the front of the stock, the cross bolt is about even with the rifles bolt. Have attached some additional pictures
Thanks again, remi

The stock is a pre-WWI RIA - it may be original to the rifle. Ithas just one stock bolt, which may also becorrect.

Thanks again,
Then what stock should a 1918 Rock Island 1903 have?
Thanks again, remi
-
1918 Rock Islands had stocks with two bolts, and "RI" stamped in the forward end and one of several inspector markings, usually with the date below.
