The Lyman 48 sight required inletting into the stock which that stock does not have. If by some strange quirk the buyer requested the receiver be drilled and tapped for the sight but did not have SA install the sight, this might explain the holes. Unless the Sales letter noted this, I would expect that the holes are a later addition. I believe it was Lyman that made a post WWII sight for the 1903 that did not require inletting into the stock.
The rifle is a beautiful NM, but unless verified as original, the holes do affect the value somewhat.

That's a nice looking 03 NM! While it's always difficult to perform a complete inspection and apprasial just from the photographs, it looks good to me from what I can see.

If you really want one, this looks like a good one to pursue. As Johnny notes, the Lyman 48 sight mounting holes may or may not be original, but on a rifle this nice, I would consider that to be a minor problem. The rifle has never had a Lyman 48 mounted on it, or the stock would be cut for the lower part of the sight.

I'm not sure where the auction is, but let's hope you are the only one there that knows what it is, and that it DOES have an SRS hit.

Thanks, again for the input, Johnny. One thing I have found from my study of the M1903 is that nothing about them is "Cut & Dry" as far as configurations, what was standard, etc, etc. When the "experts" writing the books state, "May have been..... or Some have this feature.......", Etc, etc, makes it difficult to confirm things on a particualr rifle. But the hit on SRS is a great start. Thanks.

Something else I forgot to add, but the drawing numbers on the wood had not come into use at the time that rifle was assembled.
Actually the higher the grade something is, the more that something that is not original hurts the value. On a $5000 rifle it would be a bigger hit than on a $1500 rifle.

Thanks, Everyone for your help and opinions. I was able to purchase this rifle for what seemed like a reasonable price.....when compared to Scott Duff's offerings. WIll be in the hands of my FFL dealer soon and I'll pick it up when I return home from Iraq in a few weeks.
