Looking for info on "410" enfield?
New here . Looking for info on converted No.1's that shoot the unnecked 303 brass (or .410 shells). Was told the convertion was done in India for prison use.
Thanks
Clint

It was done in British
India, and by the post-1947 Indian establishment. The purpose was probably riot control and prisoner guard. The wooden plug originally fitted in the magazine well has sometimes been replaced with a rifle magazine by recent owners. Many have been altered by the surplus dealers to shoot the 2½" or 3" cartridge.

Mine was converted to shoot modern 3" shotgun shells and I handload them with 12 grains of 2400 powder and a round ball. No recoil and very little noise. These rifles are fun to shoot although not particularly accurate past 30-40 yards. At 25 yards, all holes on the paper but at 100 yards maybe one somewhere on the paper.

I bought one at a sale and am picking it up on Sat. Is it easy to tell if it was converted to 410 and are the any special markings one should look for?

The easiest way is to drop a .410 shotshell in the chamber. If it doesn't fall in- don't shoot it! Stick to the 2 1/2" shells unless you know by measuring or by external markings that its OK w/ 3".

All the serials match, but the one under the sight has had a line struck through it and the matching number added. And the "button" on the left side of the sight is gone, so the sight can't be set for distance. Is this common?
Thanks

The sight has been replaced with a second hand one at some point, possibly during the conversion process at Ishapore. (Their motto could be: "Waste not - want not.) It is normal for the button to be removed and the range fixed by pinning.
