Welcome!
Probably not worth it. Those commemorative M1 Rifles were usually made (recently) with commercial cast receivers, not real USGI receivers, with engraved stocks and gold plated parts in an attempt to make a collectible rifle. People trying to sell them ask a lot of money for them but they usually languish unsold at those prices, until a (probably) inexperienced new collector comes along and buys it, thinking it has historic value. GunBroker.com Search Results: m1 commemorative
There is a company that cranks out all kinds of commemorative guns The American Historical Foundation
Save your money, hang around the forums, and become more informed so you won't get taken advantage of and blow a lot of money on something that isn't worth it.

Thanks for the help. I just had that feeliing about this piece. The fit and finish just did not look right. I have one now that I bought from a show, not a commemorative, but a presentation rifle from a VFW. Beautiful rifle made in 41. Cost was 1/2 what this one is. Again thanks and will keep looking.

"...they want $2000.00 for it..." Rediculous.
"...a presentation rifle from a VFW..." May or may not be shootable.
"...will keep looking..." Hi. Jump the hoops and buy one from the CMP
. Shoot the matches even if you don't have to. You'll meet some great people who will go out of their way to help you. Buy a Service Grade, if you can. $595 for a good rifle.
Start here. Eligibility Requirements
This is what is done to a CMP rifle before its put up for sale.

these "COmmemeratives are
total crapola. they are worth the sum of their parts and the "fancy" stocks are just Boyds run through a modern wood engraver. At BEST, they are worth 600 bucks and they will (essentially) never appreciate in value (beyond inflation, maybe).

Most VFW rifles are on loan from the federal government. You may want to send an email with the serial number to tomwhitten@odcmp.com to see if yours on on the list of stolen rifles. Better to find out now than to risk a felony arrest in the future.

1. I would venture to speculate that maybe HALF the VFW rifles "loaned" out by the CMP
/DCM over the last 40 years or so have LONG AGO "left the auditorium" (accountability lost)
2. Checking the list of "stolen" rifles isn't a bad idea, but if it is "stolen," you would then have to decide if returning the rifle (I am sure CMP will send you a postpaid box/label) is something you are morally bound to do (I would, but some folks would not).
3. The chances of anyone ever getting arrested for possessing a single VFW rifle that was in fact "stolen," is ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY WAY BELOW ZERO.ZERO percent. Throwing the word "felony" around in this situtation is a rather extreme bit of hyperbole.
Bottom line, don't lose any sleep waiting for any black helicopters.
