Londons Armed Police Mount-Up

Elite armed police are patrolling on motorbikes to chase down teen gunmen.

The 18 Met marksmen, armed with carbines and pistols, are being deployed in South London after a surge in gun crime.

As young gangs fight to control neighbourhoods there have been several fatal shootings in the past year. The killers have evaded police cars by driving off on bikes.

Acting Chief Supt Andy Tarrant, the CO19 unit, said: "Firearms officers have been to many boroughs and received a warm welcome from local residents."

Hi Alan,

heard this and thought off your gun-rights. Seems that this was the wrong way!? Heard at the news that the possibility to get killed in some suburbs of london by a walk thru the streets, is 10 times higher than to be hit by a lightning in open plains. And all out of the reason to make the UK a safer country??? But here is a new patrol vehicle from the italian anti-mafia-force ! Possible that they have bigger problems.

I remember watching on tv the British parliment w/ Tony Blair talking about how crime was getting out of contol. Instead of letting people own hand guns etc. again, their annswer to the crime problem was to throw more MONEY at it!! As if more cameras and cops would stop things.

Seeing as there has never been a culture of owning handguns in this country, I suspect that most people here would be against the idea.

I appreciate that this is totally different from the US.

The chances of being injured by a firearm in London or the rest of the UK are very small unless you happen to be a "gangsta" when I suspect there is slightly more chance.

One reason for some of the gun control in the UK goes back to the 1920's & 30's RED scare. When it was feared the commies would take over England and the lower classes were restricted in what they could have fire arm wise. Where as if you had wealth etc... there weren't any of those pesky limits on you.
