Okay, okay...I confess. I changed the magazine release to an M2 type so I could use 30 round mags.
And I spent more than I should have obtaining a WW2 production sling and oiler.

Nothing wrong with that as far as I am concerned. I have made a few changes on most of my carbines. Lately I have been leaving well enough alone, especially with my Austrian Rockola and same deal IF I make the cut for a SG Bavarian Police w/flip sight.
I put the JL-B stock I got with my SG Underwood onto my RG IBM and then purchased a "correct" MU stock for my Underwood. So half of my carbines have been modified by me. And I too must confess, I did put a Standard Products recoil plate onto my SP DCM carbine just so it visibly says Standard Products. I still have the recoil plate it came with so correction is just a screwdriver away.

Off topic, but what the heck...
speaking of recoil plates, I'm hesitant to remove mine since I have nicely zeroed in the carbine and have learned its quirks. Am I being overly cautious?

It should be no problem taking off the recoil plate, which you would probably want to do anyway before treating your stock. I don't tighten mine down until I remount the carbine into the stock, then "snug" it up, not too tightly.
Unless I am mistaken, I read somewhere that whenever you take your carbine out of the stock and then remount it, you change (usually ever so slightly) how the carbine fits, which is where inconsistencies come from. They even tested some modified carbines with the recoil plate permanently attached to the carbine.
I personally haven't noticed any change in performance after changing a recoil plate, not that carbines are hair-splitting accurate to begin with. The M3 "sniper" version with the IR sight was still only spray and pray afterall.

Okay, I won't get my undies bound up in a knot over this then.
Actually, I'm very happy when I keep my shots within a 4" group while standing at 100 yards.
