Just got back from deer hunting (warning - dead deer pics)

Just got back from a deer hunt in New Brunswick, managed to bag a nice 8 point whitetail. Shot him at 9:05am, Saturday November 7th with snow on the ground, he came in at 210lbs dressed.

Shot went through the front right shoulder ball joint, completely shattering it, and then on through the lungs. Deer ran maybe 30 yards and died.

I only brought two rifles, one was a 1913 production Ross M10 in .280 Ross and the other was a 1940's era Husqvarna Mauser 98 that originally came to me in 8x57, but I had it re-chambered to 8x63 Swedish pushing a 200gr pill at 3000fps. This brute came along on the day I was carrying the Mauser, thought to be honest, I would have preferred to shoot him with the Ross - oh well, maybe next year.

Holy cow, deer get HUGE up in 'them thar parts'!

My son and I each killed a doe with bows and arrow last week. I was his first deer. It was a good sized Texas doe, but it looks like a little puppy next to that thing!

I hunted New Brunswick some years ago (Nictau / Riley Brook areas) and to be honest your whitetail are some of the biggest I have ever seen. They are tough to find and it's hard work but my best friend (now deceased) got a 12 pointer that dressed at 280 lbs. He fell down a ravine which required a come-along to get it out. I was stunned and simply shocked at what I saw. I thought it was a mule deer!

Yours is certainly no slouch either. My gosh!

congrats to this nice deer. Good shot. Will taste good in a sauce with red wine, spices and some bavarian Spaetzle. :-)

Thanks Ramboueille.

It's just an acquired taste and takes a lot of practice and preparation. I've been bowhunting only for about 20 years and my son wanted to start this year.
Two of my old time archery buddies and I taught him all we could about bowhunting and practiced with him over the summer. A lot has to be learned from experience. There's a strange adrenaline when a deer is 20 years away and you swear they'll hear your heart beating, not to mention drawing a bow undetected. It's great he was able to get a deer his first season.

Now, if I saw a whitetail in Texas the size of Claven's I'd probably fall out of my treestand!

O.K. i will be the first with my 104 Kg i am falling a bit faster! LoL.

Thanks guys, this ol' boy is slightly bigger than average for what I see when I hunt NB, I live in Ontario where this a lot more whitetail, but for some reason they seem to be a bit bigger over in NB along the coast. Some of them get really big... my brother last year missed a 12 pointer that he thinks would have dressed north of 270. I saw the tracks and it's not hard to believe he's close in his guess about weight.

My buck above was shot at about 80 yards free-hand, I was standing on the ground at the time and called him in with a buck grunt. The scope is a Bushnell Elite 3200 2-7x33 in steel Leupold rings.

That is a nice buck. I think I've maybe seen one in my life that was bigger. maybe not. Show him some respect, cook him well!

Nice! Shot with a 8x63mm Swedish? Why wouldn't you use something unusual like a 30-06?
