Savage stock markings help pics (1 new)

I seem to recall somewhere in my travels reading that an "R" stamped on the furniture had the same meaning as if the "R" was stamped on a barrel, which is replacement. Can someone verify this, or was I dreaming?

I just aquired a 1942 Savage Mk1/3 that was FTR'd by Faz in 1953. The underside of the wrist has this "R" stamp along with an "F" over 53 with a few other marks. I am guessing the "F" over 53 designated the FTR.
By the way not my pics, they are the sellers, I attached the 1952 dated sling correctly

No answers? I can't believe nobody said anything about the "FR" on the butt being a mark from India or Pakistan. If this rifle had been to one of those countries would it have been refurbished in England and then stored?

This is what Ian Skennerton had to say after I sent him pics:

Hi from chilly Salt Lake City UT,
From the looks of your rifle, it does not seem to have been to India or Pakistan. And if there are no other POF or Ishapore markings, I would say it is not likely. The butt manufacture and view markings are English, so maybe the FR was not an Indian/Pakistan marking after all.
The more we see, the more we learn, obviously. So if we encounter more rifles that have obviously not seen Indian subcontinental use or issue, with an FR marked butt, such a Factory Repair marking can be extended to some British rifles as well.

The "FR" appears on most of the new, unfitted Pakistani No4 wood that is on the market at the moment - hence "FR" must be a code pertaining to that particular Pakistani manufacturer, whoever it was.

The rifle in the photos appears to be a normal beech-stocked British No4 Mk1/3 FTR'd rifle, BUT the single photo showing the "FR" stamp appears to be of one of those afore-mentioned Pakistani dark wood butts - ie not beech wood matching the rest of the rifle.

I'd guess someone has just fitted a Pakistani butt to the rifle because they happen to be freely available in "L" sizes....

Thunderbox, The markings in the picture (top left) is the underside of the wrist. That is the same butt!

Like I said, the pics in the original post are not mine, they were taken by the seller. The wood isn't that dark. Here are some I took earlier this evening. I apologize for the poor quality.

The photos below are from a No4 MkI* Savage that I recently purchased. Please note the "FR" stamp on the butt as well as the Savage mark and US proof mark. This rifle does have any ishy screw.

I also have a nice 1943 No4 Mk1 ROF(F) "pre-1968" import w/ the "FR" mark on the side of the buttstock in about the same location as Lucky Dog's. Its of lighter colour and may have been lightly sanded, but it still shows the various British inspection marks.

Odd that this thread popped up- I had forgotten these marks until today when I pulled the rifle out for a range session friday morning.


ETA Wasn't the "FR" marking question solved? I keep thinking it was addressed, but haven't stumbled on it... Dang wandering threads, not that I don't contribute to the wander at times!

Some of the stock parts I just used for a refurbish were F.R but the stamp was on the inside of the stock parts. I figured from information on the forum they were unfitted Pakistani No4.
