Hello, the post about my Quality Hardward M-1 Carbine Serial # 4.6 M, failing to close completely with a shell in the chamber vanished into cyberspace.

There was some advice provided in responses but they disappeared before I could reference them. I would appreciate if those who offered direction would be kind enough to recite their thoughts.

The problem is probably that the extractor is not snapping over the rim. It could be weak recoil spring, frozen ejector protruding and not retracting, frozen firing pin not retracting (unlikely), or frozen extractor jammed closed. Disassemble the weapon and check firing pin, ejector and extractor. If the all move freely, try disassembling the bolt and see if the stripped bolt will close on the chamber with a round in it. If all of the above seem normal it may be a weak recoil spring. Your recoil spring should measure close to 10 1/4".

Let me know what you get.

I had this problem on two carbines years ago. One had a weak recoil spring (9 1/4 inch) and one had a gunked up ejector or extractor (I forget which).

The brass case could be a little long. Probably wouldn't happen with military or commercial ammo but could easily happen with reloaded ammo.

My post suggests you check the extractor plunger and make sure it is not broken and wedged between the extractor and the bolt. This will cause the extractor to not be able to snap over the rim of the shell.

Hi,I recently had a CMP also a QH with the same problem. I checked the headspace and replaced the ejector. Finally replaced the extractor and this did the trick. The extractor looks fine but wouldn't snap over the case rim. Good Luck, Regards,Mike

I believe you are on the correct path as all ammo being used in the Carbine is new, ( see earlier jpegs).

The latest jpeg illustrates the current condition of the extractor.

Will this require a "bolt tool" ?

It won't "require" a bolt tool but using one will go a long way toward preserving your sanity.....
