1899 Krag Carbine

Can get some information on its service record and some opinions/advice on the hand guard as well as the front sight blade. If replacements are available, I would like originals rather than reproductions. I will leave it as is if I can't find original parts. The hand guard may be a legitimate repair for all I know and be perfectly OK.

The barrel is exactly 22in and the rear sight has the little C stamped into it.

From what I've been able to garner from a CGNer, the rifle may have been issued to the 6th Cavalry, I'm not sure where to look up the information on this.

As it is a later model, there are many things about it that may not be consistant with earlier models. The stock looks to have been refinished but that could just be honest wear that has been cleaned up.

The metal looks nice. Thats the original receiver finish (black oil dipped case hardened). The 1901 rear sight should actually have three little "C"s on it and probably does. One of them is a tiny little one on the slide. The stocks been heavily sanded, the finger grooves are soft. Thats the wrong handguard. To me it looks like it was meant for the 1898 or 1902 sight,and has also been heavily sanded.

The hand guard is correct for the M1901 rear sight, just been shortened at the rear.

If the 6th Cavalry had that rifle it could have been carried into action in the Phillipines and/or China. I'd do my best to trace the number. Too bad about the handguard ......

The front sight looks like it could be a Marbles retro fit. Same thing was done to my carbine. I ended up taking a bronze coin to the lathe and turned it to the proper width then cut out the OEM profile then just hit it with bluing. Turns it black and looks much better.

Mine is an 1896 C fit with an 1899 stock and 1901C sight. I don't know much about it for details beyond that..... being told that by someone else too....
I do know I love packing it for hunting!

I don't think yours is a 1896, if it was there would be a bolt handle support as a part of the action and a much larger "scalloped" cut out around it in the stock.
Is that a scope mount on it? If so you need to pull it off and check out as much of the marking as is still readable.

Sadly yes, that is a scope mount. Such a shame buddy had to do that only a year before deciding to sell it, his father in law bought it when he got home from WWII and only fired three rounds through it.

I was sure it said 1896... but now you have me doubting my memory! LOL

I didn't see anything in the photos that would indicate that is an original stock. No cartouche, no P proof behind the trigger guard. Tough!
