RM, I'm no expert on rear sights. Detailed photos are a must.

Stu, I'm not sure I would call it fake. It is a real IJ sight. They did make a lot of them for their own production. Its much like the ones on the AOs being made today. They are (were) current production facsimilies and were never meant as anything but parts for repro carbines. But you are correct in that it isn't an original GI production sight.

I didn't think it was GI either but some are really hard to tell.

All of the Plainfield and IJs I have seen in the last 30+ years have had type III rear sights. even the various WWII commemorative carbines like the D-Day had Type III. Not trying to argue, but just my observation. I am sure it is possible others may have seen a type ones on an IJ from the factory.

I thought I had seen one on a IJ, but I just checked the commercial carbine web site and it doesn't look like they came with flip sites.
It must have been another commercial carbine or someone added it.

Who knows? Maybe it will turn out to be real. I hope you do get lucky!

They made a limited run with the flip sight. I don't know how many, but there weren't a lot. I've seen a few at gun shows over the years.

We thought they were ugly when they were original!

Problem is 30 years ago most of us were used to seeing the rebuilds and thought the flip sights and narrow bands were UGLY! The Winchester that I picked up in about 82 had a flip and a "darn skinny band"

Back then, I wished it had an adjustable and a bayonet lug. What the heck, Gregory Peck used one like that in Pork Chop Hill, and Lt. Hansen on "Combat" had them with upgrades, too! Owwwwww....... I wish I had that Winchester.

See the American Rifleman advertisement of the Iver Johnson's model Plainfield, which appeared in the Oct, Nov and Dec issues of 1978.
Add shows the use of a Flip style rear sight on one of their models.

Most all of this info pulled from our hard working fellow members web sites on commercial and Bavarian carbines.

As you can see many Replica Commercial Flip Sights were and are still being produced.

Still hoping you score a real sight.
Just remember there are many out there that were used for commercial use.

I know Auto Ordnance is making them again for their WW2 version. I briefly had one, but it took three tries with Customer service to even get a stock that fit. First stock was almost 1/2" too short, and had the handguard filed back on the front to try to fit, but the band still did not seat behind the spring. GREAT quality control! I sold it to a re-enactor who was going to plug the barrel with a threaded blank adapter. I figure a isaved a real carbine from being destroyed!

    Got the Iver Johnson flipper

Got the Iver Johnson flipper from Chestnut Ridge. Nice flipper, but even though I am not an expert, I would say replica. The picture of the cast marks on the base in the fourth picture would tell me that, I think. Pretty decent, though I don't think I will put it on my Inland because it is such a shooter with the type II milled, and why change a good thing? I'll probably see if I can sell it for the $35 I paid. It is better than the replicas sold by Northridge and on Ebay. It would be great for someone doing a restoral that doesn't want to pay high dollar for original, but wants one that looks good with nice crimps on the pins.
