Ithica heat shield
Ive got an opportunity to buy a winch take down 1897 with about 70% finidh. it dates topre 1920's. It comes with what Im pretty darned sure is an Ithica original heat shield. How much is the Heat shield worth? From What I read these are more rare then the ithica trench shotguns, and the shotguns are next to impossible to find. an help here appreciated. Guy wants a grand for both, I though he was too high by about 800 dollars, but mabey the value is in the heatshield...???

Does the heat shield have a blue or parkerized finish?
If it is an original WW2 blue finish Ithaca Model 37 trench gun bayonet adaptor and heat shield, it's worth a lot of money. Not sure just how much, though. There were just over 1,400 Ithaca WW2 trench guns. They are pretty rare and when in very good condition can fetch well over $10K. There are collectors who would likely pay big dollars for a WW2 Ithaca bayo adaptor/heat shield. You might even be able to trade it (+ some money) for a WW1 Winchester bayo adaptor/heat shield.

Photos would really help evaluate the heat shield and the Winchester Model 1897 too.

Stevens, not Ithaca!!
That's a Stevens hand guard and bayonet lug, NOT Ithaca. The plum coloring is a dead give away. Is the bayonet lug marked with an S?

Well shoot, is it ww1 or ww2 or later?... need to order that darned canfield book! Is it valuable enough that I should overpay on the winch 1897?
I wasnt aware stevens even made a trench shotgun, are they difficult to obtain?

It's of WW2 mfg. Stevens made WW2 trench guns in both their Model 520 and 620. The 520 trench guns are more common than the 620 trench guns. The bayo adaptor/heat shield should work on either one. You can probably find someone who would be willing to buy that Stevens adaptor/heat shield.

I have a 520-30 Trench that needs a handguard. Keep me in mind if you decide to part with it.

No , I rarely part with a gun nowdays. Too tough to find the WW2 minty stuff anymore and I generally have one of each model , major variation , and maker , so selling one would leave a hole that would need to be refilled . This particular shotgun ( appx 95-98 % IIRC ) I purchased about 10 years ago for $150. It had the heatshield removed and a recoil pad added , but the stock was not cut. Removed the pad , added an original buttplate , and put on a spare Winchester shield I had picked up for $100 the year before . So , I have less than $300 in it now , figured I could put a few more into it and still be ahead.
Thanks anyway , Chris
