Early 1903 Sporter 250 Savage - Scope Mount Help
I don’t typically care for rifles with scopes but this one had a nice stock, really cool caliber, and a SWEET price so I jumped on it.

I’m out of my depth though. What kind of mount is this and what rings do I need? I’m thinking I’ll mount something classic like a Weaver K4 or maybe a Lyman Alaskan if I find a good deal.
Thanks in advance and enjoy the pics!

Looks like a Redfield mount. The old school vertical split rings are not cheap.

You might have to be conscience of how the rings mount on the scope(if you went with a K4) Not an expert, but unscrewing a scope lense might be necessary to slide the rings on. Not sure if stretching the rings open is recommended.
A Lyman Alaskan is 7/8" tube, and horizontal split rings might be necessary.
I would try and go with blued rings, to match what you have.

That is definitely a Redfield base. It is a later one with the contoured corners. It takes standard "turn-in" rings that are currently made by several firms, Leupold, Burris, Weaver, to name a few. They are availlable in several heights, horizontal split, blued or matt. They are very common: You can get them from ebay, Amazon, Gunbroker, etc. or your local gunshop. The vintage "thick/thin" rings would be appropriate but certainly not necessary for that rifle. An older Weaver K4 would work well but an old Weaver K6 would be perfect. The .250/3000 is one of my favorite cartridges and is mild enough to be a good fit for that low numbered receiver.

That’s exactly what I needed, guys. Thanks!
I came to the same conclusion on the low numbered receiver. Quite a lot lower pressure than 30-06.
I’ve been thinking about a Weaver 330 as well. That would be more era appropriate. Lots of options that would be pretty cool.
Thanks again!

Keep in mind that if you go with the Weaver 330, it will take 3/4" rings that are vertically split and will require the scope to be disassembled to install. Also, both scope and rings are costly since guys are using them to build fake A4 rifles. If you go with the Lyman alaskan, you will run into the same thing. Your Weaver K4 idea is the most inexpensive and practical.

Two things I’ve never been accused of being haha.
But you’re definitely right. I think that’s what I’ll be on the lookout for.

After some eBay prowling, I came up with a Lyman Challenger 4X.
Should be a fine scope for this application...and look good too!
I'll get some more pictures once the scope's installed.

The Lyman Challenger needs 26mm rings--not 1". The Challenger is a good scope (I have a couple of them) but those rings are hard to find and expensive!

I've noticed that. I'm bidding on a set now. They'll come in due time...no big rush on this end.
