“There are invisible rulers who control the destinies of millions. It is not generally realized to what extent the words and actions of our most influential public men are dictated by shrewd persons operating behind the scenes.”
Edward Bernays, 1928
Much changes, much remains the same.
Forgotten: 1919

Difficult isn't it. In WWII when all our existence was under threat then essential scrap metal was vital. Melting down thousands of captured enemy MGs was probably not a difficult choice then. I know it is not the same but the millions of churches in UKwho still do not have their original hundred year old plus iron railings/gates etc due to the war effort is amazing and still highly visible.
I do not all the details but Australiadisposing of lots of historical weapons into the sea AFTER WWII is perhaps another story!!

Second photo. Later in the war? The whole group just exudes that well worn/over used feeling.
