Well...............had a long chat with Carl at the London Proof House who explained why the barrel was stamped NON STANDARD.

They do four checks when weapons are presented to them in this way:
NO/NO GO/Throat or Neck and Freebore, much like David TS put up in an earlier thread #95.

This barrel albeit, safe to fire and use, and passed by them is somewhat tight when presented, and as such could do with a reamer being used to provide a little more space!
As simple as that.

Back to the GGG, does your rifle shoot well with it David?

I know of two Imbel Fals that also shoot particularly well with that brand.

Both mine are faultless with it. Hopefully Gils will appreciate a steady diet of finest Lithuanian cuisine too!

Mine is chambered in .308 not 7.62x51, so I have been using HPS target ammunition in it.

I might try a box of GGG though, I have been using the GGG 5.56 for several years, and it is excellent.

You can feel how far you're going, I've done it. You have considerable force to cut shoulder and this won't take that force. Not much at all...

It will be interesting to see what difference the reamer makes.

I probably ought to check the chamber dimensions on mine!

I have a fixed pilot .308 finish reamer if you need one, but considering the price you paid they should at least take it back and fix accordingly. Problem in taking it back is by law they will have to submit it for proof again, to do it yourself its a few minutes work.......

In the meantime I will try the GGG rounds on Wednesday and see what difference they make too and report back.

Well I'll be blowed...............................put 40 GGG rounds through the rifle today. Not one stoppage. Put the vern to the case and the L42A1 7.62 case, no size difference whatsoever. So really baffled, but heyho, its working as it should do as a Straight Pull L1A1.
Thanks for all the advice and support, and a special thanks to John Clark for having the confidence in the GGG rounds from the outset. It certainly seems to have solved my issue anyway on a new barrel.

One theory I've come across elsewhere is differences in case thickness, especially internally at the base, between 7.62 NATO spec ammo and commercial .308 brass. 7.62 being thicker to cope with a wide range of military firearms, LMG's etc.

Case expansion is likely to be less with a thicker 7.62 round than with thinner .308 brass. That may explain why you got trouble after only 3 rounds of the .308 in your video.

I've been meaning to dissect some empties myself to check this out.

Ps my IMBEL Fal straightpull is happy with almost any 7.62 ammo but there again it is properly chambered as 7.62 , not a tight 308.

Thanks for that. Yes it is 7.62 GGG and what is very apparent on checking each case carefully is, the offending rounds in both 7.62 and .308 had an obvious ring of brushed brass for the entire circumference. This GGG didn't so being a simple man, this tells me they were sticking in the barrel in some form. So glad to have finally got a round working in it. Take on board many comments that ALL 7.62 should work, but this trial shows otherwise.
I have often heard guys saying this in relation to .22 rounds in certain weapons which I term as state of the art like S&W or Ruger, and I know that they do have those rounds they prefer without a stoppage, so other rounds have shown this too in bigger calibres. Wonder if anyone has ever done a chart on what works and what doesn't in calibres........a testing house would certainly have one on common weapons, but not the L1A1.

I have a video of firing 15 rounds using GGG but pointless showing it, as the top cover was on and the rounds did what they say on the box.
