Hi, I have recently purchased a 1944 longbranch with a serial number which may have been re-stamped it is 963258, I was told that my No4 was sold to the South African Military but had seen very little use. When I purchased it it was covered in thick grease and oil, It also as stamped No4 mk1 III/3 FTR. Stamped on the bolt and inside the brass butt plate is 78. there is also stamped F50 in various places, I have'nt got a clue to what any of these markings mean so any information would be great.
    Cheers.

My 1945 Longbranch Parker Hale sporterized hunting rifle has serial# 84L0952. Matching bolt, receiver and barrel, but not the magazine. 5 groove bore. It has a PH scope mount and front sight. Shoots straight as a die, my most reliable rifle in the bush.

I have some photos of a 1941 #4 Mk 1, s/n 0L8461. It is a straight Mk 1, not a 1 star. Took them in Northern Britishicon Columbia the autumn of 2008 at a friend's place. It was the rifle that was issued to him by the Canadian Government Rangers, a sort of amateur militia restricted to isolated parts of Canadaicon. I told him that the rifle was a rare one and that he should so inform the bloke running their little detachment, which he subsequently did. I thought it should be given to the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa as it was still Government property in 2008. However the jerk running the unit refused to believe him and when my friend left the Rangers the following year, the rifle was collected by the guy and shipped back to their local headquarters in Victoria BC. I have no idea what happened to it after that.

Anyway, I tried to reply to this thread and attach the photos but the process is a hopeless mess; the wannabe attachment just dead-ends somewhere in cyberspace. It you'd like to see the photos, email me at hilchid@shaw.ca and I'll reply, with the resized photos as attachments.

    Regards,
    Dave Hilchie

    Hello,
just bought a Long Branch N4 MkI*, serial number 39L6130, manufactured in 1943. Carved upper handguard and steel buttstock, Mk III sight. No markings on the wooden parts. Magazine serial number doesn't match with the rifle's one. Magazine is black painted and the serial number is written by an "electric pen", not marked, "BB84814"
Bought in Italyicon, I know that it comes from an armory in Republic of San Marino. For sure it has been purchased in Germanyicon, as on the receiver it has been stamped the name of the importer (HEGE) and the bayonet lugs on the barrel have been removed ( ) due to a matter of "de-militarizing" method used in that Country until a few years ago.

    Greetings from Italy
