If there was ever an official instruction that stated that the bolt hole had to be enlarged P-07, you can rest assured that we would have heard about it. It is perpetuating a myth to suggest otherwise. As for the Ishapore connection, then I can also assure you that until well into the 50's, many Indian Army Armourers were trained at Gosport and Bordon and still use our EMER as the workshop bible. Even the 'ishy' screw has been taken directly from the EMER. But search as I can, while the 'ishy' screw modification is still there, I can't find a modification instruction about enlarging the bolt hole

From what you and 5thBatt say I think it's plausible that some people confused the larger hole on the early bolts for a modification. Makes sense, no reason to make the hole any larger and I wonder why they went to smaller size (from the larger) in early production?

Larger to smaller hole/wider chamfer............, simple! Standardisation/interchangeability with the already in production No4 bolt with the hole

I have a 4/44 No5 with the larger hole, you can feel the edge of the hole when you cycle the bolt & is a little uncomfortable, can imagine that would become painful with prolonged use.

We have something similar at work but a mixture of the two, The smaller actual hole but a large curved radial countersink leading into it.
