No, they're sharp from the factory...
Is this the knife we discuss?

That's the knife and the other Spanish Knife I have is not sharp from the factory. Edge is actually flat much like many bayonets.

I do have several examples of the 2nd Pattern Fairbairn Sykes fighting knives in my collection that don't have a sharp cutting edge and don't appear to have ever had one. Here is one such example, in my collection.

That knife was issued sharp and has been well used. If I take a perfect specimen and plunge it repeatedly into sand it will do two things, remove the crud and remove the edge. Also polishing with a scotchbright will do exactly what you have there.
That's a well worn and used specimen, not new... Still, very nice knife...

Jim, I have seen it in black and white that F/S knives were issued to soldiers unsharpened but I can't remember exactly where, at the moment. As I have mentioned I do have several 2nd pattern F/S knives with no sharp edge. All the 3rd pattern knives that I do have, do have a sharp edge and some of these 3rd pattern knives look factory sharpened while others look hand sharpened. I suspect that there was some variation with some knives leaving the factory with a sharp edge and some not. Likewise, often the 2nd pattern knives don't have the F/S logo on the blade but clearly the example of mine in post 13 does.

You'll need to find that then. Anyway, this post wasn't about FS was it? You could start a thread and see if anyone else has ever heard of this anomaly you speak of...

You raised the anomaly, Jim, not me.
