What kind of headspace gauge did the gunsmith use?
I had the opposite problem with a Forster field gauge. The bolt of my Remington 1903 would close on a Forster field gauge. I bought a Clymer field gauge and found that my Remmy would not close on a Clymer field gauge. To "break the tie", I bought a US Ordnance field gauge and found out that my Remmy would not close on it either.
All headspace gauges are not the same.
As an aside, the CMP recommends Clymer headspace gauges for 30.06 military rifles.

Chucks right. The auction houses don't want you pulling an auction unless there is a good reason. You had a good reason. You were concerned about the safety pf the item for sale and decided to terminate the auction until a determination could be made and if necesary the problem corrected.
Once the headspace issue is behind you i think you probably should relist the item on GB. To go around GB and make a direct sale to a bidder who may or may not have been successful is probably a violation of the GB rules.
The less you say at this point the better. Just thank him for his interest in your auction
Regards,
Jim
