Using a green background and hoping to capture the green tint of Parkerizing would be considered an exercise in futility.

Thanks everyone. I'm pretty well convinced now that it isn't an issued or rebuild item so am already looking for a replacement. The nice thing is that this gun has so many different contractor's parts, any particular one, as long as it's USGI, will do.

Again thanks, I stared at this so long that I actually thought I saw a side profile of a revolutionary general imprinted on it.

Twas a pure white cutting board, perhaps the Ott light I used did something.

Not enough detail in the pics or on the rest of the Carbine to express an opinion. If re-built and the letter R is a dominant feature I'd be thinking Raritan, Red River or Rock Island. But, as I say, we need more details to help. Had a NPM with MR (Mount Rainier) on the stock ?. Send a macro pic of right rear of housing. Mike.

    Oh well,

Will give it another try. Used another camera but same eyes and skill level, I do apologize in advance to those offended by poor photography. I think mpd1978 is right about it being cast and commercial. It scratches real easy and is shiny underneath. Thinking may be aluminium and coating not sticking on it real well. After I get a replacement, I'm thinking about removing coating and seeing what's underneath.

I don't know that the rest of the carbine would be too much help. I was actually just shopping for a stock for my Inland. This carbine had a Inland stock and the guy was going to change it out for me as it was just one he happened to have on it at the time. Originally he said he had a Winchester looking pot bellied stock on it and showed me that stock. I don't know much about those and wanted the Inland stock but in looking at the rest of the carbine, it had a lot of interesting parts on it and I ended up buying the thing. Receiver is SAGINAW S'G' and serial is 3247400's. Type I front sight marked N with the size 7 mark on the left side. The barrel is UNDERWOOD 8-43 with flaming ordinance bomb. Rear sight is Type III adjustable with H in a shield, staked in. I put it in my Standard Pro stock and metal and the rest is interesting research material. Type 3 front band with post war marking, Type VI slide with serial or part number 7161843 (M2). TypeIII.. Round bolt OI (waiting to see if I won auction on bolt tool before I can see what's inside. Rotary safety with post war marking. Type IV Magazine release and support with post war marking. Sear is type I BI, Hammer Type III AMB, Trigger Type II SG.

It is cast. The "R" may be for reproduction possibly?

Beats me. Didn't think there would be much of a market for reproduction trigger housings but now that I am shopping around for one and seeing the prices they are asking for GI one's, I can see where a buck or two could be made. I got my feelers out in a couple of commercial forums seeing if anyone recognizes it.

    Must end this.

On a web site M1icon Carbines Incorporated (m1carbinesinc.com), same people who do the Bavarian M1 Carbine Site, I found what I was looking for under the National Ordinance, Inc information. The make or made commercial M1 carbines out in California. Saw the "R" I was looking for and the trigger housing and this statement: "National Ordinance utilized surplus GI trigger housings as long as possible. When the supply ran out they arranged for Rimer Casting to manufacture an investment cast trigger housing to GI size specifications and dimensions. Trigger housings cast by Rimer can be identified by the letter R forward of the hammer, down inside the housing."

Will continue shopping for a trigger housing. Nope, I am not an obsessive compulsive. Or, that is what I tell myself anyway.

That's an outstanding site for finding info about commercial carbines. The amount of accurate info there is unbelievable. Before that site was put together info about commercial carbines was mostly secondhand and often unreliable or not found anywhere at all.

Just obsessively try to convince yourself you're not compulsive and you'll be fine.

I did send them an e-mail thanking them for all the work that they do and how helpful it had been to me. They have already replied, very graciously, and said they were glad that they had been helpful as that was the reason that they do what they do.
