British soldiers of both wars were issued a clasp knife. The WWI version had a blade, tin opener and marlin spike. The spike was used as a hoof pick by mounted troops, and as a rope woking tool by others.

The WWII version had a blade, tin opener,marlin spike and screwdriver but was smaller than the WWI knife. During WWII several versions were made some omitting the marlin spike, late war ones adding a bottle opener to the can opener blade.

I got no experiences with bayonets, but which do i need for my No4 MKI* Savage?

There are large numbers of Savage-Stevens Mk.II* ones about.

I have a No4MKI* from 1942 and one from 1943. Had they`re spike or knive bayonets?

The Savage made bayonets are all spikes.
Here are two types of Savage marks, found on the left side of the bayonets.

I'm shopping for a blade bayonet and I found one marked D-53. Does 53 represent 1953?

Why aren't bayonets sharp? They do MORE damage if they are not, PLUS you have a 9.5 pound rifle driving it into to someone!!! Sharp is irrelevant.

Nothing wrong with the spike but the No4MkIII otherwise known as the blacksmith's wonder, was just plain FUGLY, made up of welded together stampings but it was the cheapest to produce, 196,000 made by Lucas. It was declared obsolete on 2 May, 1946

Just for fun, the first order from the War dept after Pearl Harbor, was, wait for it............. Sharpen swords!

Probably a bunch of ex-cavalry types in the War dept.

Now that brings up something which has always puzzled me. WHY did we change the name of the War Department to the Department of Defense????
You don't fight a war by defending yourself, but rather by attacking the bad guys.

Or is this just the "kinder, gentler, gubmint?"
