Large rifle primers, whether standard or magnum, are taller than large pistol primers. If you are going to use large rifle primers in cases that are made for large pistol primers normally you are going to have to slightly deepen the primer pockets. Rifle primers in general have a thicker cup. This makes them harder to ignite reliably in a normal pistol. I would not use pistol primers in place of rifle primers for high intensity cartridges. Black powder guys seem to be able to get away with this, but I would be wary. In military or military style semi-autos the thinner cup of a pistol primer is asking for a slam fire.
