"Carbine Bud"

Bud Evers was a very good guy who got into trouble with the State of Calif. They claimed he was selling machine guns as his carbine had M2 bolts, M2 trigger housings and M2 safety's. It was the State's position that all of these parts in a semi-automatic carbine made them de facto machine guns. Never mind they were semi-automatic!! It resulted in unrelenting "visits" by the State Guys. Eventually he got caught in a sting when he sold a carbine for a Nevada delivery. He got out of gunshows and is now quite elderly and alone. A very good guy.

Bud is a great guy. He has a lot of funny stories. I spent many days over in his garage in Grass Valley and Napa. He once told me never to trust a guy who wears a belt and suspenders. Said if the guy can't trust his own pants.......

He called me the day of the first visit and said he couldn't talk the phone may be wired. I was at his house the next day, more was involed then a few bolts, trigger housings and safeties. That's all I want to say about it.

He gave me a set of his 40's silver wings which I keep in my safe. He never had kids, he would have been a fun dad, for a boy.

Neat stories. I think we all know a few of the "good guys" in the business.
You old timers who know this guy should get a collection up and send the old bird a steak or something. I'll kick in a few bucks

The Bud Evers story is indeed complicated. But, understand this, he NEVER sold any machine guns to anyone. The State of Calif wanted to make an example of someone in order to make themselves appear powerful. The Judge who handled the case refused to allow the case in his court. He forced a settlement on both parties. Bud followed that settlement to the letter, the State of Calif did not!! Again, Bud was a good guy.

Kalifornia went absolute nuts after the assault rifle ban. In 1990 I was located with my FFL in Soda Springs, CA. I did mail order and gunshows full time. (It was after my first retirement from LE)

I was at a Reno show at the Nugget and DOJ tried to do a sting on me. A guy kept coming to my table with a SP1 Colt, NIB and wanted $400 for it. I told him, I was from California and it would do me no good. (I was well known back then from my Cal-Expo, local, and Anaheim shows, etc.) I told him no. He came back about 6 times during the show. (What he did not know is that at the time, I also had a manufacturers license for a commemorative AR15 I was going to produce and market. That License was in an industrial park in Sparks, NV.) Anyway, I finally said, "OK I'll take it" He smiled and handed it over. I then said "I'll just pout it on the books of my Sparks location and keep it there" He got angry and shouted at me "You have a license in Nevada too?" and demanded to see it. I got it out of my brief case and handed it to him. He crumbled it and threw it down on the floor, and took the gun and stormed out. I called out to him to "have a nice day!"

I found out later that he only tried selling it to California dealers. They were looking for "criminals" to hang publicly for violating the law by trafficking in evil, recently basnned assault rifles.

He is out of the Carbine business. Sold off all of his inventory.

I first met him at a gun show in Salt Lake I'm guessing back in the 70s. I saved his card and then found it again in 1996. I bought a not so great carbine from a private party back when I knew enough about them to be dangerous. When I found his card I tracked down his new contact info and called him.
I traded the one I had for a saginaw that is beautifl. It is the updated version w/ lug and adjustable rear sight. It had a flat bolt but would not function. I called him and I had a new round bolt before I could get the old one sent off to him.
This was shortly after the problem with Cal. He told ne all about it on the phone. They dragged him out his front door in cuffs for all the neighbors to see and completly humiliated him.
I've had no contact with him since.
He kinda had a soft spot for Salt Lake because he took some training in Kearns Utah (west side of the valley) where he was issued his first carbine.
What a great guy. We are losing his kind at the rate of 1,000 per day.

He would have a dozen or so carbines for sale and all manner of stuff. My friend bought an inert marine mine from him. Great guy, and his wife was always there.

The Cops busted a guy in Santa Rosa about that time too. They claimed he sold a handgun out of the trunk. Raided his house with a 15 man SWAT team, made his son, who was recovering from surgery lay on the driveway in his underwear for several hours while they ransacked the house. He told me they stole a lot of stuff, gold coins, even went through his wife's underwear. Took his very large gun collection, all of it. I understand that the State Gestapo will plant guys at Reno shows and bust California residents with 15rd carbine mags at the border when they cross. Hell, a single tracer round is a felony to these Nazis.
