Garand Gas Cylinder Refinishing

Degrease the gas cylinder, brake cleaner works good. Twist a paper towel into a dowel shape and push it into the gas cylinder, the ring at the rear and the barrel path; to keep the paint out.

Hang the cylinder from the stacking swivel hole with a piece of coat hanger.

Paint it with any flat black spray paint, I use the store brand from Ace.

Bake it for an hour or so at 200-250.

It'll last for a long time, really cheap and easy to find the materials.

The only shade for the gas cylinder is flat black. Nothing else is correct.

I have used both the Caswells and Brownells Aluma Hyde II for the gas cylinders. The Aluma Hyde is a hard durable finish. Caswells must be applied exactly like the manufacture recommends.

Caswells works great. But, be careful not to leave any residue. It is corrosive. I use it to touch up regular steel. Some how it seems to blend in with normal bluing better than any cold bluing product. Again, you must thoroughly rinse away any residue to prevent rusting. I also coat the treated area with heavy grease for a day or so.

Correction on the statement that all gas cylinders are the same color, Winchester gas cylinders have a blue-black color, some being more blue than black

Rinse with hot soapy water, then dry thoroughly, then apply a lubricant for a day or so. This last step my not be necessary, but I always feel better having some grease on the metal.
