I would go with this Japanese URUSHI Lacquer YOROI KABUTO SAYA Repair Clear - eBay (item 370316926886 end time Jan-13-10 16:16:01 PST)
As I said earlier, there is a particular method for using urushi. I bought some ( from http://www.hyper-cafe.com/html/Category-12-0.html) and read up on how to apply it, but I haven't tried using yet.

A friend brough me some from Japan
. I mixed it up applied it to my stock and did not like the results. In the process got a bad case of something like poison ivy. When I got well I decided to strip the rifle and start over. Bad choice, got another bad case of poison ivy. I will stay with American finished from now on. You have to have some sort of humidity cabinet to cause the urushi to harden. riceone

As an earlier poster recommended, I'm going to just leave it alone for now anyway. I guess Urushi is one of those ideas that sounds great...until you actually try it.
For the moment I'm out in the weeds with my project Enfield (err...metaphorically speaking, of course...).
