G'day. I heard on the grapevine my rifles, Consec No'd Lithgows were being discussed on here, so i registered to take a look. They were on trademe New Zealand
this week under my user name on this site. The auction closed this morning with only one bid for $1k. The reserve was $2k. To 5TH Batt who makes the comment re my original listing some years back. Frankly, the behaviour from people who consider themselves 'experts' and enthusiasts was appalling. If the price i was asking was ridiculous, no abusive comment was sought nor justified.
Regardless, the mudslinging was rank amateurish compared to what i gave back, and the whole thing became boring. It was interesting this time around, that the quote from I S's email to me i feel took care of the back seat commentary. Not a peep from any experts ! Anyway, it's not my intent to get offside with anyone here. I don't know the history of the rifles in question except that the elderly guy i bought them off, who had them for quite a number of years, said they had been issued to two brothers during the war. I do not know if this is true but had no reason to disbelieve him. There must be some sort of story attached to them because the chances of them staying together must be pretty unusual under the circumstances. I'm a bit of a collector but in no way pretend to be an expert. The rifles are currently under offer but if they don't sell, i'll let you all know. Kind regards. Geoff.

Interesting times financially that we live in, there sure is not too much spare cash afloat in NZ
anymore, and after CH quakes we probably will miss the bump when the world picks up again. Couldn't blame you for going where the customers are.

Yes i'm sure you are correct. All the cash is in savings accounts thanks to Mr Bollard ! Everyone just seems to have been conditioned to stop spending. I've got a wife who subscribes to Mr Bollards Philos as well. Thankfully she does'nt frequent sites like this one lol.

Greetings and salutations, i hope all this time for the sale was far more advantageous and that it was more enlightening. The fact that two rifles of consecutive number of any type survives from the past is in no small way a miracle, maybe perhaps a glimpse of good fortune or possible good planning. Would have been interested in getting a good bead on these rifles to digest there past and heritage. As per Daniel Cotterils article in the sporting shooters mag that they have survived together is a bit of an enigma and that some persons have rubished that you have put them up for sale... The disbelievers, naysayers these would have to be "forgeries", oh yee have little faith. Good luck
Regards

Buy the gun(s) not the story.
Why use a 50 pound bomb when a 500 pound bomb will do?

Thanks for the comments. I've currently still got them, and may question the previous owner a little more closely on the background.
I do recall though, he was'nt able to throw much light on the history at the time i was looking at them, probably i'd say because the original 'holders' have since passed away. Who knows. Sure would be good to know. The original auction was extremely unfortunate and it just seemed i was bombarded with 'experts' who really seemed more intent with impressing each other with their ( lack of ) knowledge. These people do not determine the price for anything. The buying public do. Going to the 'top' ( I. S. ) was good enough for me ! Did'nt seem to be any dispute from there. Kind regards. Geoff.

I had a look at the listing, and they looked to be very nice rifles.
Some people go nuts over consecutive numbered rifles and instantly add $1k to the price - personally, to my mind, just my humble opinion, your mileage my vary and all other caveats to avoid anyone getting offended, or me getting flamed - they are worth NZD$700-1000 together - the price for two Lithgow
1941 SMLEs, consecutive numbers or not..... Consecutive numbered rifles don't mean much to me.
A lot of the 'experts' who get knocked on TM, or any other online forum for that matter, are long time collectors who buy their firearms at other places than just Trademe, Gun City or Hunting & Fishing, and have a pretty good idea of what prices gear is selling for.
Welcome to the Forums, and Good luck with selling them, brodixv8.
