The V-MAX's are the same weight but they are longer than the standard .30 carbine projectile and my personal experience has been that the standard 1-16 twist rate won't stabilize them. Does your new barrel have a faster twist?

I almost think that once you get it working 100% you'll tire of it and want something else

Since you won't feel guilty knowing you sold a gun that functions, maybe sell it and buy a GI carbine. Then you can have fun restoring it back to new.

I will not sell it once it's running well. Instead, I'll take it out and enjoy it as a shooter.
My other ongoing project is a wee bit too big to fit in the gun safe. I'm busy turning this:

and powering it with this from my hot rod:



I don't just tinker with shootin irons. My main fix involves horsepower. It's going to take plenty of that to make this Iowa class Imperial dance on the street.
We're on our 20-something consecutive day of 100+ degree heat. I can work on the carbine inside the air conditioned house. The Imperial can wait!

Is that a 1973? You were correct, like an Iowa Class battleship. Those things were boats, over 5K pounds. You will need that engine to move it.
But what a ride. Sweet.

Vintage... I know the twist is really slow for a bullet that long. I bought them to run through my 308 Encore pistol. Being a match in diameter and weight for typical carbine pills, I had to give 'em a shot. They do seem to perform well. This is the second time I've used them. Now that the carbine seems to run, I'll drop it on bags at the bench and see what really happens. I simply need to shim the rear sight first. That thing is wiggly loose but the staking is holding it in.

Jim, good eye. It's a 1972 with all the bells and whistles. I'll do my best to resurrect the Autotemp II automatic A/C system as well as the rear A/C unit. All the other stuff works, even the 8-track.

Boy, I'd overlook the original A/C the new ones work so much better.
